What Eagan Water Does to a Boiler

Eagan water runs 16 grains per gallon (extremely hard), and every fill or top-off of your heating loop brings those minerals into the system. Scale on the heat exchanger insulates it from the water it is supposed to heat: efficiency drops, hot spots form, and you get kettling, the rumbling noise of water flashing to steam in scale pockets. Left alone, kettling kills heat exchangers.

The fixes are routine when caught early: proper system water treatment, a power flush when scale is established, and pressure and expansion tank service so the system stops pulling in fresh (mineral-laden) makeup water through small leaks. This is standard practice on every boiler we service in Dakota County.

Eagan Boiler FAQs

Who repairs boilers in Eagan?
A.J. Alberts services boilers and hydronic heating across Eagan and Dakota County. Our licensed boiler technicians, led by Master Plumber Jason Wallraff, handle hydronic work across the metro, and Thatcher Anderson handles hydronic, in-floor radiant, radiator, and side-arm boiler work that most residential plumbers are not trained on. Call 651-738-0580 and ask for boiler service.
Why is my boiler losing pressure or running loud in Eagan?
Pressure loss usually means a leak somewhere in the loop or a waterlogged expansion tank. Kettling (a rumbling, kettle-like noise) is the hard water signature: Eagan water at 16 grains per gallon deposits scale on the heat exchanger, which overheats and steams in pockets. Both are diagnosable in one visit, and kettling caught early is treatable before it kills the exchanger.
How often should a boiler be serviced in Eagan?
Annually, ideally before the heating season. A Minnesota boiler runs hard for six-plus months a year, and Eagan's extremely hard water adds scale stress on top. Annual service covers combustion check, pressure and expansion tank check, safety controls, and a look at the system water chemistry. Our maintenance plans cover it automatically.
Should I replace my boiler with a forced-air furnace?
Usually not. Hydronic heat is more comfortable (no blown dust, even temperatures, silent operation) and the radiant infrastructure in your Eagan home is expensive to replace with ductwork. Modern condensing boilers reach 95 percent efficiency, so upgrading the boiler itself usually beats converting the system. We will give you the honest math for your specific house.
Do you install in-floor radiant heat in Eagan?
Yes. In-floor radiant (heated bathroom floors, garage slabs, basement floors) is some of our favorite work, and it pairs naturally with basement remodels. Thatcher Anderson and our boiler team design and install radiant loops, manifolds, and the boiler-side controls that make them work right.
